Two former Humphreys County sheriff's deputies were indicted on Thursday by a federal grand jury for violating the civil rights of a man, who was severely beaten and tasered during his 2011 arrest. A sheriff's vehicle dashboard camera captured former deputies Tim Hedge and Benji Lee beating 35-year-old Darren Ring, who was handcuffed and partially stripped naked in the snow. Ring was also shot with a Taser gun multiple times during the 20 minute beating. "The vast majority of police officers serve honorably and do their jobs under very trying and stressful circumstances," US Attorney Jerry Martin said. "The use of unreasonable force by law enforcement officers, however, won't be tolerated by the US Attorney's Office." In a civil suit filed earlier this year in federal court, Ring claims deputies then took him back to the jail where he was beaten and shot again with a Taser gun. In addition to the deputies, Ring claims Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, who was his high sc! hool football coach, participated in the beating at the jail. Deputies were responding to a 911 call for a report of shots fired when they came upon Ring and other men. Though he was not involved in any shooting, Ring was inebriated. During the incident, an unidentified deputy ordered Ring not to put his hands in his coat pockets, though the video footage indicates his hands were at his sides but not in his pockets.
